More than 180 Jewish entertainers and artists have publicly expressed their support for actor Mark Ruffalo. This comes in light of accusations against him of antisemitism related to his opposition to the proposed merger between Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount.
In a letter, the artists described the criticism of Ruffalo as an “outrageous smear campaign.” They stated that charges of antisemitism are being misused to target those who highlight the connection between the situation faced by Palestinians and issues of freedom within the U.S.
Paramount had previously accused Ruffalo of spreading antisemitic tropes. This was after he shared a video in August of Oracle executive Safra Catz discussing technology Oracle used after the October 7 Hamas attacks. Ruffalo suggested that Oracle’s co-founder, Larry Ellison, who is connected to the proposed acquisition, aimed to promote oppression.
The supporters, including renowned artists like Abbi Jacobson, Joel Coen, and Tony Kushner, rejected claims that Ruffalo’s comments were antisemitic. They argued that the executives themselves are linked to actions against Palestinians, as well as to silencing criticisms.
The letter also highlighted how some American Jews believe that Israel has committed war crimes in Gaza. It called for the end of wrongful accusations of antisemitism against people like Ruffalo. The artists emphasized that drawing parallels between events in Gaza and Hollywood fulfills a Jewish ethical obligation.
Ruffalo’s representatives were unavailable for comment at the time. The actor has, however, previously denied spreading antisemitism in a statement. He clarified that criticizing actions and executives engaging in military contracts isn’t the same as criticizing Jewish people.
In response to a widespread industry backlash, a group called The Brigade condemned Ruffalo’s stance. Nearly 1,000 industry insiders released a statement accusing him of promoting simple antisemitism by portraying Jewish executives negatively.
Elizabeth Barcohana of the California Republican Party criticized Ruffalo’s role in the merger debate. She praised The Brigade for challenging what they viewed as an increase in antisemitism within Hollywood, accusing Ruffalo of extremist rhetoric.
