Jewish Democrats in Michigan Consider Shifting Support in Senate Race

1 week ago 0

Key Jewish Democrats in Michigan are shifting their support to Republican Senate nominee Mike Rogers, signaling potential challenges for his opponent Abdul El-Sayed. Michigan GOP Chairman Jim Runestad expressed confidence that this opposition would lead to significant Jewish defection from the Democratic Party, attributing the shift to El-Sayed’s controversial statements and associations.

A letter signed by about 500 Jewish Democrats and independents in Michigan endorses Rogers as a ‘friend to the Jewish community.’ It warns of anti-Jewish elements gaining strength if El-Sayed were to win.

Efforts from Both Sides

Mike Rogers seeks to draw Michigan Democrats’ support after El-Sayed’s primary victory. A social media video by El-Sayed, showing him celebrating Rosh Hashanah with two Jewish women identified as pro-Palestinian activists, has raised concerns among critics, including some Democratic lawmakers.

Jonathan Greenberg, a rabbi, criticized the video as not a genuine effort to engage the Jewish community. Despite scrutiny, the video received substantial social media interactions.

Electoral Implications

It remains uncertain if Jewish opposition will have long-term implications for Michigan Democrats. The letter supporting Rogers clarifies that it does not indicate support for Donald Trump, focusing solely on the current Senate race.

The Rogers campaign claims success in their outreach to Jewish voters, with positive responses and successful fundraising events. Runestad believes Republicans could gain enduring support from the Jewish community by aligning with their values, such as entrepreneurship and lower taxes.

Community Dynamics

While Rogers could benefit from Jewish voter support, El-Sayed maintains solid backing in Michigan’s Arab American community, particularly in Dearborn. His relationship with Hasan Piker, known for controversial statements, has drawn criticism. El-Sayed dismisses these criticisms, emphasizing his commitment to fostering relationships with Jewish leaders across Michigan.

Liberal Jewish leaders in Michigan countered the pro-Rogers letter with a supportive letter for El-Sayed, gathering over 800 signatures, though acknowledging differing views on some issues. El-Sayed aims to address Jewish concerns during his campaign, seeking endorsements from Jewish lawmakers and engaging with the community.
