Jill Tokuda Wins Primary, Faces Brenton Awa in November

Rep. Jill Tokuda, a Democrat from Hawaii, secured victory in her recent primary election, setting the stage for a contest against Republican state Senator Brenton Awa in the upcoming November election. Tokuda, who is pursuing a third term, represents Hawaii’s 2nd Congressional District. This district encompasses areas outside the island of Oahu, along with rural and suburban sections of Oahu itself.

The district holds a D+12 rating from the nonpartisan Cook Political Report, suggesting a strong Democratic advantage in this year’s midterm elections.

Tokuda faced and defeated three challengers in the primary, with none significantly threatening her campaign. Despite a larger internal Democratic conflict nationwide affecting several incumbents, Tokuda emerged successfully.

Her colleague, Rep. Ed Case, also from Hawaii, encountered a substantial primary challenge. Case is perceived as more moderate compared to Tokuda.

Tokuda’s primary attracted some controversy due to an altercation involving Kirill Basin, one of her longshot opponents. The incident, captured on video at Keawakapu Beach, showed Basin in a physical clash after allegedly threatening a man about loud music. As the situation escalated, Basin reportedly brandished a knife.

The video was disturbing, and accountability is necessary regardless of whether one is running for office or just a private citizen. Tokuda commented to Hawaii News Now.
