Sony Pictures Television Studios has terminated Jim Thornton’s role as announcer for Wheel of Fortune. The decision follows a detailed investigation, as confirmed by a Sony spokesperson to Fox News Digital.
The news of Thornton’s dismissal comes shortly after his suspension earlier this week. Thornton had served as the announcer for the popular game show since 2011.
“We have recently been made aware of allegations concerning Jim Thornton,” said a spokesperson for Sony Pictures Television Studios on September 1. “He has been suspended from Wheel of Fortune, and we are recasting while we conduct a thorough investigation.”
The exact nature of the allegations remains unspecified. However, reports indicate an incident from May involving Thornton on an American Airlines flight. A passenger complaint led to law enforcement meeting Thornton upon the flight’s arrival in Los Angeles.
American Airlines commented, “On May 14, American Airlines Flight 1276 was met by law enforcement upon arrival at Los Angeles International Airport following concerns reported by a customer onboard.” TMZ reported that Thornton was not arrested or charged.
On September 2, Thornton’s attorney issued a statement addressing these allegations, acknowledging that law enforcement found no wrongdoing after a brief inquiry. Thornton was not taken into custody.
Thornton’s role as announcer began after the passing of his predecessor, Charlie O’Donnell. As of now, Ryan Seacrest hosts Wheel of Fortune.
