Joe Manganiello recently shared details about a serious health challenge that he faced over seven years ago. During an appearance on “CBS Mornings,” he discussed his condition and his newly published memoir, “Bloodlines.” Manganiello revealed to Gayle King that he was offered the role of Deathstroke, the primary antagonist in Ben Affleck’s canceled “Batman” film, but at the same time, his health was deteriorating.

Manganiello received the movie role offer in 2016. However, he soon had to undergo major surgery. He explained, “I got the call about a month out of the hospital after I collapsed on another set.” After suffering for a year with unexplained symptoms, Manganiello was hospitalized for two months, ultimately requiring removal of his entire large intestine to save his life.

“I went into the hospital for two months straight and, at the end of my stay, they wound up having to remove my entire large intestine to save my life.” — Joe Manganiello

Following the surgery, Manganiello was left with an ostomy bag and faced additional health challenges such as significant weight loss, difficulty walking, and temporary loss of vision. He recounted, “They had split me open. My entire large intestine had turned to pus, and it was about to explode.” During the recovery period, Manganiello was also dealing with the emotional toll of his illness.

The actor shared that his former wife, Sofia Vergara, played a crucial role in his recovery. “They had to call her as my next of kin and give her options of what she thought I would want done to me while I was unconscious. She chose the right one, and it bought me time,” Manganiello said. Despite their marriage ending in 2023, Vergara’s decisions during his health crisis are credited with saving his life.

Manganiello noted how his condition affected his marriage. He said, “That kind of pain was like a flood in my life. You can’t predict how that’s going to affect people.” The couple, married in 2015, officially divorced in 2024.

The memoir “Bloodlines” details Manganiello’s experiences and struggles during this period. When asked about a post by Vergara’s son, Manolo Gonzalez Vergara, describing a “narcissistic” man, Manganiello stressed that readers should focus on the genuine suffering he endured, as relayed in his book.

“Bloodlines: A Memoir” became available on October 13. It offers a deep insight into Manganiello’s personal challenges, his health battle, and the impact on his relationships.
