Journalist Gershkovich Discusses Wrongful Detention and Release in Russian Prisoner Swap

7 hours ago 0

Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, who spent over a year detained in Russia before his release through a major prisoner swap in 2024, shared his experiences on “Fox & Friends.” He discussed his new book, This Cursed Beautiful Land, which details his ordeal.

Arrest and Detention

Gershkovich recounted the circumstances of his arrest. He and a colleague were reporting on how Russia was shifting its economy to a military focus. They met with a source they had consulted for four years, which turned out to be a setup.

“I realized the arresting officers were FSB agents, the successor to the Soviet KGB, not just police,” Gershkovich explained. “Once the FSB was involved, it was clear this was a planned operation,” he added.

Gershkovich described being taken in a van, interrogated, and assaulted. Upon arrival at the station, he was formally accused of espionage. He understood his source, Pavel, had set him up, suggesting the motive was a prisoner swap.

Charges and Conviction

Arrested on March 29, 2023, in Yekaterinburg, Gershkovich faced espionage charges. The Biden administration declared him wrongfully detained. Despite accusations being condemned as a pretext for hostage-taking, he was convicted in a closed court in 2024 and sentenced to 16 years in a penal colony.

The Wall Street Journal and U.S. government strongly denied the charges. Friends and family campaigned for his release, highlighting the sham conviction.

Prison Experience

In an interview, Gershkovich shared how the U.S. administration worked on a potential prisoner swap involving him, U.S. Marine veteran Paul Whelan, and Germany. During his imprisonment, news of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny’s death deeply discouraged him, casting doubt on the exchange’s success.

Finally, in August 2024, Gershkovich and Whelan were freed through a multinational prisoner swap.
