Junior receiver Owen Crouch recalls a pivotal moment in his breakout season with Jacobs. A play that significantly impacted both his performance and the team’s success occurred recently. Two weeks ago, the Golden Eagles overcame a 17-point deficit against Burlington Central, maintaining their unbeaten record. Crouch’s 74-yard touchdown catch from quarterback Austin Stennett reduced the gap to 20-10.
Crouch reflected, “I’ve been thinking about this year. I believe that catch was a turning point for me, setting the standard for how I want to continue the rest of the season. We never mentally lost that game. Knowing we can rally back is crucial as we face significant upcoming games.”
Standing at 5-foot-11 and weighing 150 pounds, Crouch followed up the Burlington game with a stellar performance against McHenry, recording five catches for 135 yards and touchdowns of 69, 19, and 18 yards. This 49-6 victory positions Jacobs (5-0, 5-0) to compete for the top spot in the Fox Valley Conference race against Huntley (5-0, 5-0).
Jacobs coach Brian Zimmerman expressed admiration for Crouch’s route running and reliable hands, noting the importance of Crouch’s long touchdown in igniting the comeback against Burlington Central. “That catch sparked the night’s rally,” Zimmerman noted. “He’s precise, shifty, and resilient. Despite some hits, he catches everything. His hands are incredible.”
Crouch attributes his skills to hard work with Stennett, his junior quarterback, over the years. “I focus on route running and catching ability,” Crouch shared. “Every day, we work together, testing what we like and don’t like. Having him by my side helps us figure out things together.”
Stennett has also made strides this season, enhancing the team’s offensive capabilities. Their bond with Crouch plays a significant role in this growth. “Owen has been my receiver since our freshman year,” Stennett said. “Our connection has strengthened over the years, evident in the past weeks.”
Now, Jacobs prepares to face Huntley, aiming to maintain their unbeaten status. “This is a big game,” Zimmerman stated. “It’s Huntley’s homecoming, possibly drawing 5,000 attendees. We focus on hard work, keeping our momentum. Our group, initially underestimated, has proven themselves.”
Crouch aims to remain level-headed for one of the season’s pivotal games. “Huntley is a strong team at 5-0, but we approach it as just another week,” Crouch explained. “Our goal remains going 1-0 each week.”
Having transitioned from junior varsity last season to Jacobs’ leading receiver, Crouch appreciates his breakthrough. “I was a JV player waiting for my chance. Now that it’s here, it feels rewarding,” Crouch said. “My past efforts have paid off. Seeing everything come together boosts my confidence.”
