Justin Langford’s Journey from Wrestling Injury to Football Comeback

2 hours ago 0

Lincoln-Way Central’s Justin Langford faced a significant choice after injuring his shoulder during a wrestling tournament early in the winter season. Although he felt pain, the extent of his injury—a torn right labrum—was unknown until the regionals. He pushed through the wrestling season, but once the injury was confirmed, Langford had to consider his options.

Langford’s passion and future lie in football, which made his decision more complicated. Surgical repair would mean missing his senior football season. Langford, a 6-foot-2, 210-pound defensive lineman, chose physical therapy instead. This choice allowed him to play this fall for the Knights. Despite a 42-0 defeat against Lincoln-Way East in New Lenox, Langford performed notably by recovering a muffed punt in the game.

Langford expressed hope, saying, “I thought [recovering the punt] was going to be a turning point for us in the game.” The Knights struggled to maintain momentum and faced turnovers, allowing the Griffins to dominate.

So far, Langford’s shoulder has been resilient, enabling him to continue on the football field. He has planned recruitment visits, including one to Central Michigan and a recent trip to Valparaiso.

“I went through physical therapy and use some tape,” Langford said. “I have a brace, and it feels brand new. I feel as good as new. It was disappointing to miss the state wrestling tournament, but I’m glad to be back.”

Returning to football posed challenges. Langford commented on his recovery, “It was a little rough. I had physical therapy for strength and inner muscles. I went twice a day, then came to football to lift and do everything to get back.” In six games since his return, Langford ranks second in tackles on the team, with 28 tackles, including 13 solo, one sack, one interception, and a team-high four tackles for losses.

Lincoln-Way Central coach David Woodburn praised Langford, noting his growth from last season. “He’s a leader and probably one of the fastest on defense, maybe even the fastest on the team,” Woodburn said, impressed by Langford’s multiple roles on the field.

Langford’s versatility, including standout defense and brief stints at tight end, highlights his potential for a college football career. He shares his commitment: “I live for football — I love football. I want to do anything to get my face out there.” Despite recent losses from dramatic one-handed catches, Friday’s heavy defeat felt like an anomaly.

Langford’s passion for the sport and camaraderie with teammates remains unwavering, despite challenges. “I love the brotherhood with my teammates,” Langford stated. “Win or lose, being part of this is great.”
