Tennessee state Representative Justin Pearson, known for his participation in the ‘Tennessee Three,’ recently secured a victory in the Democratic primary for Tennessee’s newly redrawn 9th Congressional District. Pearson, representing District 86, outpaced several competitors, including state Senator London Lamar, community activist Marion LaTroy Alexandria-Williams, and attorney Jim Torino. He is set to contest in November against the Republican nominee. The campaign efforts have allowed him to amass a substantial amount in campaign funds, surpassing those of his Democratic rivals.
Pearson’s campaign has gained significant support from ‘the Squad,’ a group of progressive Democratic lawmakers. Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts, and Summer Lee of Pennsylvania attended a rally with Pearson in Memphis. National left-leaning groups such as Justice Democrats and MoveOn have also backed him.
Pearson gained recognition in 2023 as part of the ‘Tennessee Three,’ due to his involvement in a gun-control demonstration on the state House floor after the Covenant School shooting in Nashville. This incident left three children and three adults dead.
The demonstration led to the expulsion of Pearson and fellow lawmaker Justin Jones by Republican lawmakers. However, they eventually reclaimed their positions. A third legislator, Gloria Johnson, narrowly avoided expulsion by a single vote.
The redrawing of Tennessee’s congressional map, which split Memphis into three Republican-leaning districts, influenced this primary election. This change prompted the retirement of long-serving Democratic Representative Steve Cohen, who represented the previously Democratic-favored 9th District. Before the map’s revision, Memphis was unified under a Democratic seat in an otherwise Republican-dominated state. The new configuration could shift the political balance, favoring the GOP in all districts.
