Senior outside hitter Kailey Skurka from Lake Central is approaching a significant milestone in her volleyball career. With seven regular-season matches and at least one postseason match ahead, Skurka needs 51 more kills to reach 1,000 career kills. Reflecting on this achievement, Skurka noted, “It’s something that I’ve been working toward since freshman year because I always knew I could do it, especially with four years on varsity.” Achieving this would signify a culmination of her hard work.
Skurka, committed to Seton Hill, has been instrumental this season with team highs in key statistics: 195 kills, 115 digs, and 219 serve receptions. Before the Indians (11-6, 7-1) faced Duneland Athletic Conference leader Chesterton, Coach Naveed Nizam highlighted her impact, saying, “It’s a huge thing for her legacy here at Lake Central.” Lake Central plans to establish a ‘1,000 club’ to acknowledge players reaching milestones in assists, kills, and digs. Skurka could become a part of this honor.
Known for her leadership and court performance, Skurka inspires teammates, including senior outside hitter Arielle Carter-Reed. Carter-Reed, who recorded 91 kills, 109 digs, 215 serve receptions, and a team-high 23 aces, remarked, “It elevates my game because I want to play as good or even better than Kailey, so it pushes me to try and work more.” Their partnership extends back to when they were 12, with Carter-Reed motivated by Skurka’s achievements.
Following Skurka’s lead, the team aims for success this season. Skurka expressed hope for tying in the DAC and winning sectionals, stating, “I feel like we can win. We have the team to win.” Looking ahead to college, Skurka is eager to compete at a higher level and build new friendships. “I’m looking forward to meeting new people and competing at a higher level,” she said.
