Kamala Harris Criticizes ICE Shooting and Calls for Investigation

Former Vice President Kamala Harris criticized Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) following the fatal shooting of a Colombian national during an operation in Maine. The incident sparked debate, with critics pointing out her silence on murders committed by illegal immigrants.

Harris demanded an immediate, independent, and transparent investigation into the death of 26-year-old Joan Sebastian Guerrero. Guerrero was shot while attempting to evade ICE officers during an operation targeting an illegal immigrant with a removal order, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

Joan Sebastian Guerrero should still be alive, Harris stated on X. This is the second fatal ICE incident in a week involving individuals not targeted by the operation.

She noted that Guerrero’s death was witnessed by his three-year-old daughter and called it unacceptable in America, urging accountability for any wrongdoing.

Harris’ remarks drew criticism online, highlighting her role in the Biden administration’s efforts to address Central American migration. Critics noted her lesser public mourning for Americans killed by illegal immigrants compared to her condemnation of ICE actions.

ICE officers were conducting surveillance at a known address of an illegal immigrant in Biddeford, Maine, when Guerrero allegedly tried to escape, leading to officers’ weapon discharge. Guerrero, who drove toward federal agents, was shot, and emergency services were contacted immediately. He later died from his injuries.

Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin stated that Guerrero was not the target of the operation. Guerrero had crossed the border illegally in September 2023 and was granted a work permit in May 2025, but work authorization does not provide legal status.

Critics cited the death of Georgia nursing student Laken Riley by a Venezuelan illegal immigrant and the murder of Maryland mother Rachel Morin by a Salvadoran illegal immigrant to highlight Harris’ previous silence on such cases.

Harris did not publicly acknowledge Riley or Morin’s deaths until questioned by Fox News host Bret Baier in an interview. She described the cases as tragic, empathizing with the victims’ families.

These deaths became key issues during the 2024 presidential campaign and the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement efforts. Social media users also mentioned angel families, who are relatives of Americans killed by illegal immigrants advocating for stricter immigration policies.

Harris’ recent statements follow a prior post regarding another fatal ICE shooting in Houston. Lorenzo Salgado Araujo allegedly tried to ram federal officers during a traffic stop. Harris expressed condolences for his family, echoing calls for investigation.
