Brody Guthrie’s Varsity Promotion
Brody Guthrie, a junior at Kaneland, has taken a unique path to starting as quarterback for the varsity team. Initially promoted to varsity as a sophomore backup, Guthrie’s advancement received mixed reviews from Knights coach Mike Thorgesen. ‘We kind of went against our norm,’ Thorgesen noted. Usually, players are moved up if they’re expected to play regularly. Guthrie was brought to varsity last season to shadow Jalen Carter while also gaining experience in JV games.
Early signs show Guthrie’s promotion was beneficial. In the season opener against Rock Island, Kaneland won 49-7 with Guthrie completing 9 of 11 passes for 203 yards and three touchdowns. His performance included connections with senior wide receiver Colten Van Dyke for 73 yards and two scores, and senior wideout Cooper Stombres for a touchdown.
Learning From Experience
Discussing his growth, Guthrie expressed gratitude for the opportunity to play and learn from varsity seniors. He reflected on a past game where he played significantly due to Carter’s early injury. Carter now plays defensive back at Northern Illinois but still supports Guthrie. ‘He took me under his wing,’ said Guthrie, appreciating Carter’s mentorship.
Guthrie’s journey to quarterback wasn’t straightforward. Initially, he played safety and receiver in fourth grade, later spending time as an offensive lineman before a growth spurt prompted a switch to quarterback. His first big moment came when he threw a 45-yard touchdown on his debut as a quarterback.
Dedication and Team Support
Guthrie’s commitment to football is evident outside regular practice hours. He participates in private sessions with ex-Chicago Bears quarterback Mike Hohensee and trains with a Rockford-based 7-on-7 team. Guthrie and his receivers meet for early morning throws at a sports dome in Yorkville, strengthening their coordination.
Kaneland’s coaches and players respect Guthrie’s diligence. Coach Thorgesen applauds his dedication, noting that Guthrie is chosen as one of the team captains. As the team adapts to a new lineup, Guthrie is confident in their potential. ‘We have skill at every position and determined players who want to win,’ Guthrie assured.
