The Kansas City Chiefs are preparing for their preseason opener against the Los Angeles Rams on August 15. Patrick Mahomes, their star quarterback, is recovering from an ACL tear sustained in Week 15 of the 2025 season. According to head coach Andy Reid, Mahomes is unlikely to play during the preseason.
Reid expressed uncertainty about Mahomes’ participation, saying, There’s a pretty good chance I don’t play him [against the Rams].
Reid emphasized that the focus is on giving newer players more experience, stating, We’ve got new people in those other positions behind him that need some work, and so the more reps they get, the better.
The Chiefs have several backup quarterbacks in need of integration into the team’s system. Justin Fields, Mahomes’ primary backup, has joined the Chiefs for his first season following a trade earlier this year. Garrett Nussmeier, a rookie selected in the seventh round of the draft, also stands to gain valuable experience from additional preseason play.
After the game against the Rams, the Chiefs will have two more preseason games against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Seattle Seahawks. Their regular-season opener is set for September 14 against the Denver Broncos.
