Kansas-Missouri Rivalry Game Takes Unexpected Turn with Social Media Blitz

The annual college football clash between Kansas and Missouri, once known as the Border War, took an unexpected turn this week. The Kansas Jayhawks stirred up considerable attention before the game with a provocative social media video.

Kansas’ Bold Social Media Strategy

Prior to the matchup, Kansas released a hype video meant to energize fans. It included the usual elements: music, game highlights, and a voiceover. However, the video also incorporated imagery related to slavery and the Civil War, highlighting Missouri’s history during that period.

The decision to include such controversial content led to the video going viral, achieving over 12,000 reposts and being viewed 34 million times. The video painted Kansas as the heroic side, while casting Missouri in a villainous role, using historical references such as Civil War newspaper clippings and featuring figures like Abolitionist John Brown.

Mizzou’s Reaction and Game Outcome

The video did not sit well with Missouri, particularly Head Coach Eli Drinkwitz. He expressed disappointment, especially given the game’s timing on September 11. Drinkwitz emphasized the need for unity on such a significant date and felt the video’s approach was inappropriate.

Missouri responded on the field with a decisive 38-21 victory over Kansas. Despite being tied at halftime, Missouri pulled away in the second half. In a final act of defiance, rather than simply running out the clock, Missouri attempted another pass play, sending a clear message to their rivals.

The Nature of College Football Rivalries

College football rivalries often transcend the game itself, tapping into local histories and cultures. While some argue that they shouldn’t delve into longstanding grievances, others see it as an integral part of the sport’s passion.

Missouri Coach Drinkwitz articulated the sentiment by acknowledging the rivalry’s depth beyond football. The game, now infused with the social media incident, added another layer to the storied rivalry.

College football fans anticipate continued fervor when Kansas and Missouri meet again. Rivalries like this make the sport unique and captivating.
