Kelsey Grammer on the Unexpected Path of ‘Frasier’

Kelsey Grammer shared insights on what shaped ‘Frasier’ into a television hit during his appearance on ‘Planet Tyrus.’ Post ‘Cheers,’ Grammer initially considered a different show. One significant conversation shifted his career direction.

Grammer, known for his role as the Boston psychiatrist on ‘Cheers,’ spent nine seasons evolving his character. He was offered another show when ‘Cheers’ concluded. The producers believed in his potential to lead a new series. Initially, Grammer agreed. He and the show’s writers crafted a different story, but Grammer felt it fell short.

It’s funny, I had visions. They said, ‘We want to do a show with you when Cheers is over.’ So we actually started doing it with the same writers that ended up on ‘Frasier.’

Kelsey Grammer credited John Pike, then Paramount’s president, with influencing his decision. Pike suggested continuing with ‘Frasier.’ His advice came after a dinner conversation where Pike critiqued the initial script.

Grammer realized the potential in portraying Frasier, but with some conditions – no marriage or children. This approach provided fresh creativity for the show. Moving the character from Boston to Seattle was pivotal in differentiating ‘Frasier’ from ‘Cheers.’ This location change justified his son Frederick’s limited presence, avoiding the perception of Frasier as a neglectful father.

The show launched on September 16, 1993, and it ran for 11 seasons, culminating on May 13, 2004. It earned 37 Primetime Emmy Awards and attracted a massive audience for its finale, reaching 25.2 million viewers. Grammer returned to his iconic role in a 2023 revival on Paramount+, focusing on Frasier’s return to Boston. Despite the reboot’s two-season run, John Mahoney, Frasier’s father on-screen, was notably absent due to his passing in 2018.

Grammer fondly remembered Mahoney, who was known for his kind and jovial nature. A humorous anecdote about Mahoney’s on-set interactions with the dog Eddie revealed the lovable tension between actor and pet, with sardine oil used to encourage cooperation.

In reflecting on his experiences, Grammer expressed enthusiasm for life’s possibilities. He cherished the diverse experiences and interactions encountered in various settings, including bars, which ironically paralleled his character’s setting on ‘Cheers.’ Whether it was through interactions with fans or adventures off-screen, Grammer’s zest for life and new experiences kept him motivated.
