Kennedy Center’s Future Tied to Renovation Plans Amid Legal Battle

1 month ago 0

The Kennedy Center faces potential demolition if its renovation plans and the reinstatement of President Trump’s name do not proceed, according to a legal filing. The board of the Kennedy Center described the arts complex as “embarrassing to the nation’s capital” and criticized its current condition.

Lawyers from the Justice Department are advocating for a two-year renovation plan costing at least $250 million. This plan, supported by President Trump, who became the complex’s chairman in February 2025, would require closing most performance venues. If not approved, the center may become unsafe and may need to be demolished, with proposals for a new structure such as an amphitheater overlooking the Potomac River.

The renovation plan faces opposition in a lawsuit by Rep. Joyce Beatty of Ohio. She filed an emergency motion to halt plans to name the complex for Trump and to prevent his name from being added to the signage.

The Kennedy Center board meeting on Aug. 13 proposed placing Trump’s name on signage around the center, with potential additional naming rights if a fund reaches $100 million. In May, Judge Christopher R. Cooper ruled the renaming of the institution as the Trump Kennedy Center unlawful, stating the name should remain for President Kennedy unless changed by Congress.

P.J. Elliott, a Kennedy Center spokesperson, mentioned that the current discussion is hypothetical. Beatty’s team criticized the board’s decision-making process and suggested the urgency is unnecessary.

The board’s filings included minutes from meetings on June 11 and Aug. 13, detailing renovation guidance from Delta Consulting Group, led by CEO Darin Buchalter, and the construction company JLL. Both companies have not commented on their involvement. There is no record of consultation with arts administrators or acoustic experts in the planning stages, and specific details remain under seal.
