Beshear’s demand follows an announcement from McConnell’s office stating that the 84-year-old senator has not yet been cleared to leave the rehabilitation facility where he is undergoing physical therapy. This development caused McConnell to miss a crucial political event in Kentucky and upcoming Senate votes.
McConnell was initially hospitalized on June 14 due to a fall, a detail he disclosed weeks later. Beshear, considered a potential presidential candidate for 2028, previously asked McConnell in July to provide more information on his health after weeks of silence. The recent letter escalates his request, as Beshear asks McConnell to address Kentucky’s people directly and prove his capability to serve or resign.
Governor Beshear also addressed Senate Majority Leader John Thune, calling for an investigation into McConnell’s health if the senator does not affirm his ability to serve. There has been no comment from McConnell or Thune’s offices on the letter.
Senator McConnell, who has led Senate Republicans for nearly two decades, is known for maintaining privacy regarding his personal life. His office has released significant updates on July 12 and July 27, each accompanied by a single photograph. Public scrutiny on aging officials has increased following recent health issues and deaths in office, such as the passing of California Senator Dianne Feinstein in 2023 and South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham, alongside President Joe Biden choosing not to seek reelection amid health concerns.
