Knicks Owner Engages in Public Feud and Legal Battle

New York Knicks owner James Dolan took a verbal jab at Mayor Zohran Mamdani during a city celebration for the team, questioning the mayor’s loyalty as a true Knicks fan. This remark followed public disagreements between them regarding championship watch parties.

In another development, the ongoing legal conflict between former Knicks forward Charles Oakley and Dolan reached a conclusion when Oakley’s lawsuit against Madison Square Garden (MSG) and Dolan was dismissed for the third time. Oakley was originally involved in an altercation at MSG in February 2017 and was subsequently removed. Although he faced arrest then, charges were later dropped.

Oakley filed a lawsuit, citing false imprisonment and defamation. MSG responded with plans to pursue legal action against Oakley’s attorney, Douglas Windsor, claiming his firm has filed baseless claims.

“For more than nine years, Mr. Oakley’s lawyers have pursued claims they knew were false,” MSG stated. “Those claims have now been dismissed by the Court in their entirety — for a third time.”

Judge Richard J. Sullivan pointed out that Oakley’s case seemed more like a public relations strategy, falling short of federal legal standards. Oakley’s legal team expressed disappointment and hopes for a jury trial, maintaining that differing accounts of the incident exist. They plan to appeal.

Despite these legal battles, Oakley remains a Knicks supporter. He was present at several playoff games as the Knicks clinched their first NBA Championship in over 50 years, this time cheering them on from the stands.
