Laura Loomer’s Shift on Ukraine and the Influence of Russian Propaganda

Laura Loomer gained notoriety for spreading online conspiracy theories. However, her recent visit to Ukraine, observing the war’s impact, marked a significant shift in her views. A close ally of former President Donald Trump, Loomer now admits falling for misinformation and advises fellow conservatives to be cautious of Moscow’s narrative, which she claims misled many in America.

In Kyiv, Loomer spoke with the Associated Press after a trip near the warfront in eastern Ukraine. Despite the meeting initially planned at her hotel, a missile threat forced a retreat to a bomb shelter. Loomer highlighted the importance of forming opinions based on facts rather than relying on external influences.

Though not holding an official role with Trump, Loomer said they discussed her meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy over the phone. Her unexpected shift has been positively received by Ukrainian officials, improving U.S.-Ukraine relations. But, it sparked confusion and skepticism in the U.S.

As the U.S. Congress considers new sanctions against Russia, Loomer anticipates her visit will nudge discussions positively for Ukraine. “It’s looking good for Ukraine,” she commented, with upcoming talks planned between Trump and Zelenskyy.

Loomer’s views on Ukraine had minimalized the conflict, aligning with Russian propaganda. She expressed regret, admitting she was swayed by misinformation portraying Ukraine negatively. Banned from mainstream social platforms, she resorted to Telegram, where Russian media is prevalent. Loomer attributed her anger over the 2020 election to being misled by such outlets.

She noticed shifts among influential conservative voices were amplified by Russian channels, which led to her reexamining her stance. Describing herself as an independent journalist, Loomer claimed her transformation is already influencing Trump’s supporters.

“I’ve received widespread support,” she noted, citing messages from followers who appreciated her newfound perspective.

Ukrainian officials valued the opportunity of engaging a prominent Trump supporter. Loomer met various leaders and visited significant sites like the Dormition Cathedral, a target of recent aggression. Zelenskyy’s office commended her bravery amidst ongoing threats.

Tetyana Berezhna, Ukraine’s deputy prime minister, expressed hope that Loomer’s experiences would positively impact U.S.-Ukraine relations. Trump’s engagement with Loomer’s experiences, shared extensively on social media, underscores her ongoing influence.

Loomer remains a controversial figure due to her past spread of conspiracy theories. Despite this, her condemnation of false narratives is noteworthy. Concerned about misinformation’s national security threat, Loomer urged stronger action against foreign propaganda.

Consistently asserting her independence, Loomer stated Ukraine did not sponsor her visit. “I was not paid by anyone, including the Ukrainian government,” she declared, emphasizing her self-funded trip.
