When LeBron James announced his 24th NBA season with the Philadelphia 76ers, team expectations surged. Following the trade for Jaylen Brown, the excitement grew further. For Sixers coach Nick Nurse, a pressing question emerged: what position will LeBron play?
Utilizing Offense Creator LeBron
Speaking on NBC Sports Philadelphia’s “Takeoff” with John Clark, Nurse addressed the rumors about LeBron’s potential role. Clark inquired, “The word is out that maybe LeBron’s gonna play some point [guard]?”
Nurse quickly confirmed, “He is an offense creator. He is certainly a guy that will bring the ball up the floor and try to create for himself and others. He is really good for others. I think that lends itself to that, yeah.”
James is renowned for his versatility, able to excel in all five positions. Serving as the primary ball handler could benefit the Sixers’ roster, including Tyrese Maxey. Before James’ arrival, Maxey frequently carried the ball up the court. Nurse highlighted Maxey’s shooting prowess, saying, “I keep saying how great a shooter he is. So, he’d better get ready to catch and shoot some of those deep threes that he takes.”
Nurse emphasized the importance of player versatility. “Let’s not forget how great Tyrese is with the ball. So, I think being able to be versatile with other guys, putting them in different places, I think always is beneficial too,” he explained.
Impact on Young Players
Adding James extends benefits to young talents like V.J. Edgecombe. “He’s a young guy that can see a guy who’s a true pro, right? He knows how to work. He knows what it takes,” Nurse remarked.
However, success hinges on how Brown, James, Maxey, Edgecombe, and former MVP center Joel Embiid combine their talents in the offseason. Despite their potential, there is only one ball.
Managing Star Power
The question is, who gets the key shots? Brown, potentially the team’s new face? Maxey, known for clutch performances? The often-injured superstar Embiid? Or James, arguably one of the best players in history?
These questions loom large for one of the NBA’s most intriguing teams this season.
