Lifeguards in Action: Thousands of Beach Rescues Amid Dangerous Surf Conditions

A young boy recently found himself in peril at a California beach, swept away into the ocean’s powerful surf while standing in ankle-deep water. Ryder Williams, a 16-year-old lifeguard at California State Parks, responded swiftly. On July 25, he radioed for assistance and plunged into the water at Seabright State Beach in Santa Cruz. This rescue, highlighted by Fox News Digital, earned significant praise, including from former President Donald J. Trump.

While hazardous beach conditions plagued California, lifeguards in Los Angeles County undertook nearly 2,000 ocean rescues as people flocked to the beaches in response to extreme heat. The National Weather Service warned beachgoers about elevated surf and potent rip currents affecting the Southern California coast.

The Los Angeles County Lifeguard Division uses Instagram to urge visitors to engage with on-duty lifeguards before entering the water.

Hurricane Fausto’s swells impacted Southern California during the rescue weekend, creating life-threatening surf and rip currents. A subsequent swell from Tropical Cyclone Genevieve was anticipated to exacerbate surf conditions in Los Angeles and Ventura Counties.

Dr. Molly O’Shea, a pediatrician, suggests that these conditions can persist intermittently due to El Niño and related swells. El Niño’s strengthening may keep surf elevated, emphasizing the need for caution. Dr. O’Shea advises swimming near lifeguards and ensuring proper flotation devices are available.

The National Weather Service advises remaining calm if caught in a rip current. Swimmers should avoid swimming directly against it and aim to move parallel to the shoreline. Those unable to escape should float, tread water, and signal for help.
