Five students from Lincoln-Way East High School were removed from a varsity football game on Friday night. They reportedly engaged in ‘racist harassment’ and displayed ‘offensive’ behavior towards Homewood-Flossmoor fans in the student bleachers. Statements from both high schools released on Saturday addressed the incident.
Superintendent Jennifer Norrell and Principal Clinton Alexander from H-F District 233 expressed concern over the actions of the students. In their joint statement on the school’s website, they stated, ‘The five student fans made a very bad choice to engage in disrespectful and racist harassment towards HF students seated in the bleachers.’ They commended their staff for acting swiftly to remove the individuals safely from the premises, ensuring the safety of their students in the bleachers.
The district is collaborating with Lincoln-Way East leadership and local authorities as they explore ‘all options to protect against this in the future, including legal options.’
Lincoln-Way East also issued a statement, acknowledging the seriousness of the incident. ‘We are aware that a group of five Lincoln-Way East students displayed inappropriate and offensive behavior at the football game against Homewood-Flossmoor on Friday night. The students involved are not members of the football team,’ the statement read. They apologized to the HF community and stated that this behavior does not align with the standards expected from Lincoln-Way students.
The school confirmed that the students involved have been identified and appropriate disciplinary actions will be pursued according to their policies and procedures.
