Lisle Man Charged in Fatal Fox River Boat Crash

Authorities are pursuing legal action involving a tragic boat crash on Fox River that led to the death of Magdalena Jablonska. The incident is linked to a Lisle man driving recklessly while under the influence.

Richard M. Stevenson, 45, faces charges of aggravated driving under the influence and reckless homicide. A wrongful-death lawsuit filed Wednesday seeks at least $50,000 in damages for Jablonska’s estate and her fiancé, Alan Telmni. He survived the deadly crash but sustained physical and emotional injuries.

The collision took place on July 25 in a ‘no-wake’ zone near McHenry Dam. This area requires reduced speeds from boaters. Stevenson allegedly drove at around 75 mph despite these regulations. His 31-foot tritoon, with three 500-horsepower engines, collided with Telmni’s slow-moving, smaller vessel.

Stevenson’s blood alcohol level reportedly exceeded twice the legal limit when tested post-crash. He is currently held in McHenry County jail until his court appearance on Aug. 21.

The lawsuit, filed in McHenry County Circuit Court, alleges Stevenson’s speed caused his boat’s front end to rise significantly, impairing his view of other boats. It states his actions resulted in a decapitation injury to Jablonska, killing her and inflicting injuries on Telmni.

The suit claims Stevenson’s impairment contributed to Jablonska’s wrongful death and Telmni’s physical and emotional trauma. Telmni witnessed the decapitation of his fiancée, sitting inches away from him.

Attorneys for the plaintiffs plan to hold a news conference on Thursday to discuss the case further. Jablonska, a former U.S. Marine, leaves behind her fiancé, parents, and four siblings. Family members describe her as a person who brightened every space she entered.

An online fundraiser was created in her honor to support two dog shelters, raising over $30,000 by Wednesday.
