After experiencing ongoing difficulties with their special teams, the Los Angeles Rams have decided to make a change. Following an unsuccessful game against the Buffalo Bills, head coach Sean McVay reviewed the team’s performances and made significant adjustments.
In a closely fought match, kicker Harrison Mevis missed a pivotal 50-yard field goal early in the game and had another 48-yard attempt blocked during overtime, leading to a 37-34 loss. Consequently, the Rams chose to part ways with Mevis on Tuesday.
The Rams signed Blake Grupe from the New York Jets’ practice squad to take over the kicking responsibilities. NFL Network initially reported these roster changes. McVay didn’t hold back when discussing the team’s kickers, emphasizing the impact of their performance on the outcome of the game. “In the kicking game, especially with our PAT, field goal, not even close to good enough,” McVay stated. “It cost us the game tonight.”
Since McVay became head coach in 2017, the Rams have consistently struggled with kicks, recording 81 misses or blocks, ranking them third in the NFL for that period. ESPN reports that, since last season, the Rams have experienced opponents blocking three of their kicks, tying them for the most in the league.
Despite the current setbacks, Mevis previously showed substantial promise. Nicknamed the “Thicker Kicker,” he impressed in his previous season with the team, making 12 of 13 field goal attempts and remaining flawless in extra-point attempts across both the regular and postseason. Unfortunately, this season began differently, with Mevis succeeding in only five of nine field goal attempts.
As for Grupe, the Rams hope he can provide the reliability they need. With a track record that includes playing for teams like the Indianapolis Colts and New Orleans Saints, Grupe has maintained solid accuracy, converting 86 out of 106 field goal attempts over his three-season career.
In his recent stint with the Colts, where he played five games, Grupe impressively made all 11 of his field goal attempts. The Rams are counting on him to bring that consistency to their team.
