LSU and the Southeastern Conference (SEC) are embroiled in a significant sports controversy. The Tigers football team, led by Lane Kiffin, attempted to recruit two former NFL players for the 2026 season: tight end Dae’Quan Wright and defensive tackle Zxavian Harris. Previously, they both played for Kiffin at Ole Miss but recently spent time on NFL rosters, contradicting SEC and NCAA regulations. A Louisiana judge briefly allowed the decision, causing tension between the university and the conference.
LSU has since decided not to add the players for the 2026 season, labeling the issue as resolved. Nonetheless, the SEC plans a “special meeting” on Thursday to deliberate on the potential expulsion of LSU from the conference.
With opinions from sports analysts emerging all week, renowned college football coach Mike Elko of Texas A&M shared his thoughts. “This is a little bit like the son figuring out where the limits are until dad comes home and raises his voice, and then the son goes, ‘I was just kidding, I didn’t mean any of that,'” Elko commented. “I think that’s what you’re seeing.”
The possibility of the SEC removing LSU, one of its oldest and most successful teams, seems largely speculative. Cutting ties with a prominent program like LSU, and a notable figure like Kiffin, could negatively impact the SEC. Notre Dame’s thriving independent status, supported by strong branding and a large TV contract, highlights this potential. It appears the SEC might rely on LSU more than vice versa.
Despite this, Elko’s observations hold weight. Kiffin often tests the boundaries of regulatory allowances. With the SEC hinting at severe measures, LSU has opted for compliance.
