Lucas Haas: A Rising Baseball Talent

Lucas Haas, a Valparaiso pitcher, has caught the attention of college baseball teams. Standing at 6-foot-4 and weighing 195 pounds, Haas has a fastball clocked at 91 mph with exceptional spin. His performance last summer was hard to overlook. Speaking about his recruitment, Haas said, “I attended the Future Games before the recruiting window opened. When it opened on August 1, many schools reached out to me. It slowed in the fall but picked up again after the latest high school season.”

Haas had an impressive junior year, with a record of 6-2, a 2.58 ERA, and 66 strikeouts over 46 innings for the Class 4A sectional champion Vikings, who finished 23-8. Indiana, Notre Dame, and Purdue were among the schools showing interest. However, the Cincinnati Bearcats made a significant impact on him. “After my first visit, Cincinnati stayed on my mind,” he said. On July 8, Haas committed to Cincinnati, where coach Jordan Bischel has led the team to consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances.

Haas is confident that Cincinnati’s coaches will help develop him. “As a freshman, many schools don’t prioritize player development in the first year, but I believe I can make a difference and support the program,” he explained. Committing before his senior year allows Haas to focus on high goals. Valparaiso coach Todd Evans commented, “His ambition is high. He wants to achieve all-state status and wishes for more wins at regional and state levels.” Evans praised Haas as a “bulldog” with unrivaled competitiveness and work ethic.

Haas values his drive above his fastball capabilities. He stated, “I’m willing to outwork anyone. At Cincinnati, I plan to remain on the field, proving my worth.” His father, Ryan Haas, encourages him not to relax. “Commitment isn’t the end. He must keep working and aiming for larger goals beyond college,” said Ryan Haas.

Looking forward to his senior year, Haas wants to enjoy the time with his Valparaiso teammates. “I aim for another state run and to enjoy my senior season with friends,” he added. As he anticipates joining Cincinnati, Haas remains eager to build connections and focus on achieving success.
