In Mississippi, a 51-year-old man has been arrested on a murder charge following the death of Tasia Fortune. Fortune, a 29-year-old Black mother of four, was found hanging from a tree behind an abandoned house last month. The case had garnered significant media attention and public interest due to the historical context of racial violence in the state.
The suspect, identified as Jarques Ratliff, is a Black resident of Jackson with a prior personal connection to Fortune. Jackson Police Chief RaShall Brackney announced Ratliff’s arrest at a news conference, stating it occurred on Capitol Street in Jackson. He was apprehended without incident after police executed search warrants at related properties. While the arrest marks progress, the investigation continues, and more arrest warrants are anticipated as new leads emerge.
“We understand this case is being viewed through a broader lens – a global lens,” said Chief Brackney. “We are taking them seriously. At the same time, we do have a responsibility to make sure that what we say publicly is supported by our evidence and the facts.”
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., recently called for the Department of Justice to investigate hanging deaths of Black Americans, referring to them as “widespread modern-day lynchings.” This comes amidst the arrest of Ratliff in connection with Fortune’s death.
Fortune’s body was discovered on August 3 in Jackson, behind a vacant property. Investigation efforts involved interviewing approximately 15 people and reviewing physical evidence. Only after the Mississippi State Medical Examiner’s Office classified the death as a homicide were formal arrest warrants issued for Ratliff.
Addressing the public’s interest, Chief Brackney stressed evidence-based investigation over speculation. She refuted claims shared on social media about a suspect aged 65, clarifying no person of interest was officially designated before Ratliff’s arrest.
Upon learning about the homicide ruling and Ratliff’s arrest, Fortune’s mother, Christy Spivey, expressed relief and appreciation for the police’s efforts. She remained convinced her daughter did not die by suicide and was working to improve her life at the time of her death.
Ratliff is detained at the Hinds County Detention Center, awaiting a court appearance where charges will be read and bond set. Police have not disclosed specifics concerning physical evidence or Ratliff’s relationship with Fortune. Further arrests are possible as the investigation progresses.
