A man has been charged with hate crimes after causing a disruption during Shabbat services at Manhattan’s Central Synagogue. Larry Montes, 46, from the Bronx, is facing two counts of assault as a hate crime and one count of criminal mischief as a hate crime, among other charges. His actions during the service included striking a congregation member and damaging synagogue property.
According to Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, during the incident, Montes also spat at and head-butted a member of the synagogue’s security team. A police sergeant, who was present as part of a paid security detail, arrested Montes immediately. Fortunately, no serious injuries occurred.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani expressed his dismay regarding the event, emphasizing that all New Yorkers should practice their religion free from fear of violence. In addition, several other leaders including Gov. Kathy Hochul, Attorney General Letitia James, and Senator Chuck Schumer condemned the attack.
Enhanced police presence was ensured, and the Shabbat services proceeded on the following Saturday. Rabbi Rebecca Thau addressed the congregation, acknowledging the challenge of maintaining religious focus amidst such incidents.
