Man Hospitalized After Bison Attack in Yellowstone

A man was sent to the hospital after a bull bison, appearing agitated, tossed him roughly eight feet into the air near a campground road.

A photographer at Yellowstone National Park captured the incident where the bison charged and threw the man. This behavior may relate to a testosterone increase common at the start of the bison’s mating season.

The attack happened Friday night at about 8:30 at Bridge Bay Campground, close to Yellowstone Lake in Wyoming. The man involved, Carl Isom-McDaniel, who is active in local boards in Washington State, sustained several broken bones.

The bison, visibly disturbed, was seen charging at campers in the area, as recorded by Mike MacLeod, a professional photographer from Bozeman, Montana, located about 130 miles away.

Many tourists were present around the campground, which had small recreational vehicles and tents set up, with sunset about an hour away. Despite the group keeping a distance, the bison, seemingly in a testosterone surge due to the mating season, charged at different groups. It first targeted a small group of teenagers who managed to escape unharmed.
