German authorities, led by Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt, initiated a manhunt for Abdul Ballout, a German national of Lebanese descent, deemed armed and dangerous. ‘Everything indicates we are facing an Islamic terrorist attack,’ stated Dobrindt. Ballout, known to police for past offenses and radicalization, has connections to Islamic circles in Berlin.

Ballout was born in Germany, where his mother obtained citizenship in 2002. Previously, he received a suspended sentence of one year and ten months, though details of the conviction remain undisclosed.

The attack occurred when a white van struck a crowd in Berlin’s Tiergarten park at approximately 10 p.m. Saturday. Following the crash, the suspect reportedly used a machete to attack multiple individuals before fleeing the scene.

The assault claimed the life of one woman, critically injured three people, and seriously harmed eight others. Berlin’s fire service confirmed the total number of injured as 29. The attack took place near the Christopher Street Day Pride celebration, Europe’s prominent LGBTQ+ event, but not directly on the parade route. Victims included festival attendees and other park visitors.

Organizers promptly halted the festivities, calling off live performances and ensuring safe evacuation from the area. Police spokesman Florian Nath confirmed Ballout’s identity, acknowledging his membership within Berlin’s Islamic circles. Police executed searches across Berlin, including an apartment in Schöneberg, but have yet to apprehend the suspect.
