Marist’s Haven Enselman Achieves Volleyball Milestone with 1,000 Assists

Over the weekend, Haven Enselman of Marist reached a significant milestone by surpassing 1,000 assists in her high school volleyball career. This feat is impressive for a setter only six matches into her sophomore year.

“It’s a big accomplishment,” said Enselman. “I’ve dreamed of hitting 1,000, but now I want to push for 2,000 or 3,000.” By Saturday’s end, her tally was 1,034.

Enselman contributed 25 assists, eight digs, and four kills as the RedHawks dominated Lockport 25-8, 25-11 during the 32-team Mizuno Crimson Classic at the Great Lakes Volleyball Center in Aurora.

Maggie Kurpeikis, committed to Michigan, and Taylor Berg, heading to Western Michigan, added eight kills each. As a result, Kurpeikis and Berg were named co-MVPs of the tournament and joined Enselman on the all-tournament team.

Natalie Bochantin led Lockport with seven assists and made the all-tournament team along with Hutsyn Timosciek and Kyla Mitchell. Lockport reached the finals after defeating Benet 21-15, 25-13, 19-17, while Marist overcame Lincoln-Way East 25-13, 25-16.

Though reaching 1,000 assists is substantial, Enselman’s achievement nearly went unnoticed with no ceremony or balloons. However, Marist coach Jordan Vidovic was impressed. “That is fast,” Vidovic remarked. Enselman excels at delivering the ball quickly and effectively to hitters.

“Her speed benefits the hitters,” Vidovic explained. “She helps by getting the ball out fast.” Her teammates appreciate her contributions. “She keeps our tempo,” said Berg. “Her energy and intensity are invaluable.”

Sara Kwasigroch of Sandburg holds the Illinois High School Association record with 3,659 assists from 2001 to 2004. Molly Murrihy holds Marist’s record with 3,075 assists set between 2015 and 2017. Enselman, who achieved 938 assists as a freshman, could surpass these records if she maintains her pace.

Enselman’s development is a focus for Vidovic, who isn’t holding back in his training approach. “I challenge her relentlessly in practice,” he said. Enselman embraces these challenges. “I like when he’s hard on me,” she said. “It makes me a better player and person.”

Enselman draws inspiration from Nebraska’s Bergen Reilly, known for her easy-looking play. “Reilly makes it look simple,” Enselman noted, aiming to emulate her style.
