Mary Peltola Emerges as Leading Candidate in Alaska Senate Race

2 hours ago 0

Mary Peltola, previously known as an Alaska congresswoman, is currently leading the state’s Senate race against incumbent Dan Sullivan. The latest polls indicate she holds a 7-point lead, overcoming recent controversies about her alleged treatment of staff.

The New York Times/Siena University poll, conducted from September 24 to October 1 among 504 likely voters, shows Peltola garnering 50% of the vote, compared to Sullivan’s 43%. This represents a significant turnaround from June when the poll had her trailing by 2 points. The margin of error for this survey is 5.1 percentage points. Peltola shared her optimism on social media, noting, “In June, we were down by 2 points. This month, in the very same poll, we’re up by 7. Alaska, we can win this.”

If her lead persists, Peltola would become the first Democratic senator from Alaska since Mark Begich’s loss to Sullivan in 2014.

Peltola vs. Sullivan: Latest Polls Insights

Recent polls offer varied results for the Peltola-Sullivan race. A Quantus Insight poll conducted between September 28-30 among 758 likely voters showed Sullivan with a slight advantage, 46.1% to Peltola’s 45.5%, a mere 0.6-point difference, with an 8-point margin of error.

Similarly, a survey by Republican pollster Trafalgar Group between September 22-24 among 1,079 likely voters favored Sullivan by 1 point. In contrast, a poll by co/efficient between September 14-17 among 799 likely voters gave Sullivan a +2 margin. However, Alaska Survey Research’s poll between September 10-12 among 1,352 likely voters favored Peltola with a +5 margin, within a 3-point margin of error.

Impact of Allegations on Peltola’s Campaign

Peltola faces accusations stemming from a New York Times report published on September 23, detailing alleged abusive behavior with staff. The exposé includes claims of her using offensive language toward staff, which Peltola denies. Her campaign attributes these allegations to the stress of coping with personal tragedies, including the deaths of her mother and husband in 2023.

Despite these allegations, Peltola’s poll numbers have risen, suggesting Alaskan voters remain unchanged by the report. This reveals a level of support for Peltola amidst her struggles.

Sullivan’s Strategy Amid Controversy

Sullivan’s campaign has attempted to leverage the New York Times exposé against Peltola, with the Last Frontier PAC releasing campaign ads targeting the Democrat. Meanwhile, Peltola’s campaign focuses on Sullivan’s financial dealings. Reports claim Sullivan violated the STOCK Act, benefiting extensively from stock trades.

Peltola has campaigned for banning congressional stock trading, contrasting with Sullivan’s active trading record. Her financial disclosures show minimal stock holdings, reinforcing her stance on financial transparency in Congress.

Significance of Alaska Senate Race for Democrats

The Alaska Senate race represents a crucial opportunity for Democrats in the forthcoming midterms. While facing a Republican majority in the Senate, the Democratic Party aims to gain additional seats, including this symbolic seat.

Peltola’s approach as a centrist targets independents and moderate Republicans, growing Democrat hopes of a Senate majority. Recent polls show declining support for Trump in Alaska, correlating with Peltola’s upward momentum against Sullivan.

As Alaska shifts politically, Democrats remain hopeful, connecting Peltola’s success to broader national ambitions.
