A young hockey player in Massachusetts has received an indefinite suspension following a violent incident captured on video. This took place during a game between the South Shore Kings and the Bay State Breakers at a rink in Foxboro.
In the widely-shared video, an 11-year-old Breakers player is seen skating up the ice and delivering a forceful, two-handed slash to the head of a Kings player. Many viewers compared the incident to Marty McSorely’s infamous slash on Donald Brashear.
As social media amplified the video’s reach, there were numerous calls for the player’s suspension. The Breakers team responded, confirming the player’s indefinite suspension from both practices and games. Massachusetts Hockey is investigating to determine the final length of the suspension.
The player involved reportedly sent a letter of apology to the victim, who is reportedly unharmed following the incident.
Such a punishment is deemed necessary. While younger players may show poor judgment occasionally, wielding a hockey stick in this manner is unacceptable. The team acted appropriately, and it is hoped that the player will spend ample time reflecting on their actions.
