Discovery of Underground Tunnel in San Diego
Authorities uncovered an underground tunnel connecting Tijuana and San Diego. It was likely used for trafficking drugs, weapons, and people across the U.S.-Mexico border. The operation led to the seizure of an estimated $45 million worth of drugs.
Major Drug Bust at Calexico Port of Entry
Federal officials discovered over 1,000 pounds of cocaine concealed under the floorboards of a commercial truck entering the U.S. from Mexico. This marks one of the largest drug busts in Southern California this year, according to the Department of Justice.
The seized cocaine, hidden inside a truck and flatbed trailer at Calexico Port of Entry, was valued at over $20 million. This discovery is the second-largest cocaine bust in the Southern District of California this year.
“A tremendous amount of drugs, even by the standards of this district,” prosecutors stated.
Legal Proceedings and Arrest
Jose Manuel Lopez, 44, a Mexican national and the sole occupant of the truck, faces charges of importing cocaine into the United States. If convicted, Lopez could receive a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years and a possible maximum life sentence. He pleaded not guilty during his initial federal court appearance.
Additional Details on Seizure
Authorities removed the wooden floorboards of the truck trailer due to detection of anomalies during an X-ray inspection. They discovered 366 packages of cocaine weighing over 1,000 pounds. The trailer was carrying 269 bundles of rebar, unloaded by officers after a narcotics detection dog alerted them.
Context of Recent Seizures
The only larger seizure this year occurred in May when officials uncovered over a ton of cocaine linked to a cross-border drug tunnel, valued at approximately $45 million. The collaboration involved U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Homeland Security Investigations, and the Drug Enforcement Administration.
