Matt Damon’s Gluten-Free Diet Transformation for ‘The Odyssey’

1 hour ago 0

Matt Damon has undergone a dramatic transformation for his role in the upcoming film “The Odyssey” directed by Christopher Nolan. During a discussion on Amy Poehler’s “Good Hang” podcast, Damon revealed that he has permanently cut gluten from his diet, an adjustment he describes as life-changing.

The Oscar winner explained that this dietary change occurred as he undertook intensive physical training for the role. Damon successfully reduced his weight to 167 pounds, a notable shift that reverted him to a weight he hasn’t seen since high school.

“It’s just a complete lifestyle change,” Damon commented on getting fit in his 50s, noting the significant impact of removing gluten.

Damon further elaborated on the adjustment, emphasizing that once he realized the effect gluten had on him, he lost any craving for it. “No, because of what it does to me… I didn’t know,” he expressed when asked about any lingering desire for gluten-containing foods.

Amy Poehler noted that many in their generation lacked awareness of food sensitivities while growing up. Damon agreed, sharing that recognizing his sensitivity has significantly improved his life, despite missing gluten-rich foods like bread and beer.

Earlier this year, Damon shared details about his rigorous training regimen for portraying the legendary Greek hero, Odysseus, in “The Odyssey.” Speaking on Travis and Jason Kelce’s “New Heights” podcast, Damon revealed that his weight dropped to 167 pounds, marking his leanest appearance in decades. Nolan had a clear vision for Odysseus, desiring a character who was lean yet strong, and eliminating gluten was central to achieving that vision.

Damon attributed much of his success to working with a personal trainer, who helped him maintain focus on his goals. Having clear objectives and the guidance of a trainer, he explained, were crucial to navigating the demanding process.

This isn’t the first instance of a drastic transformation in Damon’s acting career. In the 1996 war film “Courage Under Fire,” he lost between 40-50 pounds in approximately 100 days. He later disclosed health warnings from doctors about potential heart risks associated with such severe weight loss.

While Damon’s past transformations have come with warnings, his recent dietary change has had positive effects, fostering a healthier lifestyle.
