2 hours ago 0

Recent protests in Paris over the cost of living have erupted into violent riots, resulting in significant damage to businesses. According to The Associated Press, a McDonald’s on Boulevard de Magenta near Gare de l’Est was severely ransacked, with vandalism visible throughout.

Reports from Le Monde indicate broken windows and damaged interior. A security guard mentioned the destruction extended to computer screens as well. In the chaos, an ice cream machine persisted in spilling vanilla onto a floor already covered in ketchup.

“These are not protests anymore,” commented French-born restaurateur Olivia Ostrow, highlighting the broader tensions fueling the unrest.

The disorder was not confined to McDonald’s alone. A local café called La Barrique, positioned near Place de la République, experienced similar devastation. The son of the café’s owners shared that his mother suffered a head injury during the attack and required hospital care.

The rampage also targeted grocery chains, including Franprix, Monoprix, Picard, and Carrefour City. A Franprix on Rue Beaurepaire was thoroughly looted, with shelves emptied of products. Looters were seen leaving supermarkets with bags filled with various items.

An Intermarché Express and a Nicolas wine shop on Boulevard de Magenta also faced looting and destruction. Wine bottles lay shattered outside, amidst graffiti marking several walls.

These incidents occurred during demonstrations protesting France’s rising living costs. Rising tensions and hostilities are evident, affecting not just the businesses but the social fabric of Paris.

Many citizens expressed their outrage on social media regarding the ongoing destruction. Concerns are also being raised about antisemitism and the role of social media in such conflicts.

Governments abroad are now advising travelers heading to France to avoid large gatherings and remain cautious during their visits, as reported by Reuters.
