Meghan Markle is reportedly in discussions to rejoin the acting world, potentially bringing her career full circle since leaving royal duties. People magazine confirmed that Markle is in talks to appear in Season 3 of Guy Ritchie’s drama series ‘The Gentlemen,’ contradicting previous reports that the deal had collapsed.
Kinsey Schofield, host of YouTube’s ‘Kinsey Schofield Unfiltered,’ highlighted the implications of Markle’s return to acting, questioning what it means for her other ventures. Since her departure from royal life, Meghan attempted various roles, including podcaster, producer, and philanthropist, among others.
‘Returning to acting would suggest that Meghan’s most viable professional identity might be the one she initially left behind,’ Schofield said.
The discussions are reportedly in very early stages. Filming for ‘The Gentlemen‘ takes place in the U.K., where Meghan also shot a cameo for Amazon MGM Studios’ comedy ‘Close Personal Friends‘ last year.
Doug Eldridge, founder of Achilles PR, commented about Meghan’s challenge in establishing a consistent identity since leaving royal life. Eldridge noted that Meghan’s previous acting experience as Rachel Zane in ‘Suits‘ set a solid foundation, but the struggle lies in sustaining a career once the cameras stop rolling.
A spokesperson for the Sussexes stated that Meghan and Prince Harry plan an extended stay in the U.K. this autumn. Their business operations will still be based in the U.S. but the potential role in ‘The Gentlemen‘ played a part in their decision to spend more time in Britain.
Despite skepticism from experts like Schofield, the opportunity poses benefits. Markle’s time in California involved significant partnerships with Netflix and Spotify, though results were mixed. Her Spotify podcast ‘Archetypes‘ ended after one season, and Netflix’s ‘Pearl‘ was scrapped before production.
Dan Wakeford, founder of Celebrity Intelligence, believes Meghan could have little to lose by returning to acting, the career that ignited her initial fame. He suggested finding an exceptional script could surprise critics and reignite her star power.
Meghan has a background in Hollywood with minor roles in shows like ‘Fringe‘ and ‘The League‘ before her breakout role on ‘Suits.’ Her departure from acting followed her engagement to Prince Harry.
Royal family popularity polls place Meghan and Harry near the bottom in Britain, yet Meghan’s ability to garner attention remains significant. The interest surrounding her potential return to acting could draw viewers eager to see her performance.
From a producer’s perspective, the allure of global curiosity surrounding Meghan is tempting. Schofield noted that attention and sustainable career-building differ vastly. The potential success of her acting return depends on whether viewers want to see her character continue beyond the initial intrigue.
