Meta Shifts Focus to AI with Workforce Changes

At LlamaCon 2025, an AI developer conference in Menlo Park, California, the Meta logo appeared prominently on a video screen. Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, has initiated a major reorganization as part of its strategic pivot towards artificial intelligence. This shift involves significant workforce reductions and role changes geared towards AI development.

According to an internal communication, Meta plans to reduce its staff by 10%, equating to about 8,000 employees. The company spokesperson, Erica Sackin, confirmed that the impacted employees received notification of this decision. Moreover, approximately 7,000 employees are expected to transition into roles within AI-focused teams.

A source close to the matter, unable to comment publicly, revealed that these employees would be realigned to support new AI projects. However, Sackin refrained from elaborating on which specific teams would be expanding or contracting due to the reorganization. Initial reports by Reuters detailed the creation of four new teams dedicated to developing AI tools and applications, but NPR has not independently confirmed these details.

Meta’s AI ambitions come amidst fierce competition in the tech industry. Companies like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google have advanced considerably, securing top talent and investing heavily in infrastructure. In response, Meta is also allocating substantial resources, projecting capital expenditures for this year to be nearly twice last year’s figures.

The reorganization reflects a broader trend in the tech sector, as many companies adjust their operations and staffing amidst a heightened focus on AI. Concurrently, Meta navigates a challenging period. After heavily investing in the “Metaverse,” the company is now scaling back on virtual reality initiatives initially championed by CEO Mark Zuckerberg in 2021.

Meta also grapples with legal setbacks, having recently lost significant court cases in New Mexico and California concerning the alleged negative impacts of its platforms on young people’s mental health. In the upcoming months, Meta, alongside other tech firms, will face court proceedings led by school districts. These cases challenge Meta’s social media influence and its purported role in exacerbating mental health and addiction problems among students.
