Iran Warns of Response to U.S. Sanctions

Iran has issued a stern warning against the new U.S. sanctions set to be announced. Tehran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Esmail Baghaei, stated that any escalation would lead to severe consequences, emphasizing that Iran’s hands are not tied. The new head of Iran’s top security body also declared that any support for these sanctions would be seen as an act of war.

The sanctions target countries cooperating with Washington. They follow an impasse where the U.S. has failed to loosen Iran’s control of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital oil transit route. Iran demands the lifting of the U.S. naval blockade, withdrawal of U.S. forces, and reparations. Despite historical challenges, Iran’s economy has shown resilience against sanctions by developing new trade links and industries.

On the brink of the U.S. announcement, Iran’s currency reached a record low. The Strait of Hormuz remains a focal point, with Iran holding talks with Oman about managing the waterway.

China Criticizes New Sanctions

China expressed disapproval of the U.S.’s new sanctions, warning that additional pressure would worsen the situation. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian stressed that these actions could disrupt global economic and financial stability. China, the largest importer of Iranian oil, appeals to all parties to avoid exacerbating tensions. Before the conflict, China imported over 80% of Iran’s oil.

Israeli-Syrian Tensions and Talks

Following Israeli airstrikes in Syria, Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani met with an Israeli delegation in Jordan. The meetings, mediated by the U.S., aimed to ease tensions and restart security negotiations. The airstrikes targeted the Abu Duhur air base, with Israel claiming it sought to prevent Turkey’s influence on Syrian military rebuilding.

Syrian officials argued for military development and international alliances, demanding Israeli withdrawal from the contested buffer zone. The Golan Heights remains a point of contention, with Syria maintaining its claim over the territory.

Oil Tanker Attack Near Saudi Arabia

An unidentified projectile struck an oil tanker off the Saudi Arabian coast. The British military reported a fire on the main deck, although no casualties occurred. Iran-backed Houthi rebels, previously active, have not claimed the attack.

Israel Kills Hamas Militant

The Israeli military announced the killing of a Hamas militant involved in past conflicts. This follows a series of targeted strikes by Israel, particularly after U.S. efforts to progress a ceasefire deal. Targeted killings have continued nearly every day since a U.S. meeting with Prime Minister Netanyahu.

Gaza’s health ministry reports at least 1,288 Palestinian deaths in this period. The international community often views these figures as reliable.

West Bank Tensions with Israeli Settlers

A Palestinian American in Qusra, West Bank, finds his movements restricted by ongoing settler threats. Loui Ridi, who recently traveled from Ohio, faces continued settler aggression. Israeli authorities have yet to arrest the settlers responsible.

Rights groups and international officials have condemned the Israeli response as inadequate, labeling the settler violence as terrorism. The West Bank remains central to Palestinian statehood aspirations, hosting millions of Palestinians and Israeli settlers. Settler violence has intensified this year.
