Milwaukee Brewers Pitcher Dustin May Injured After One Pitch

1 month ago 0

An alarming incident during the first inning of a Major League Baseball game on Wednesday night led to the departure of Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Dustin May after throwing only one pitch. Facing the New York Mets, May’s initial throw became his last when Mets center fielder A.J. Ewing struck the ball back toward May.

The sinker, initially traveling at 95.8 mph, was hit back at May at 106 mph. May managed to turn his body, but the ball still struck him in the back, specifically hitting his right shoulder as detailed by the ‘Foul Territory’ podcast on social media. Third baseman David Hamilton then fielded the ball and threw Ewing out at first base.

Despite the successful out, May knelt on the grass in pain. The training staff assisted him as breathing appeared painful due to the impact. May attempted to continue, throwing several pitches while raising his arm and shaking his right hand between throws, as the Associated Press reported. However, he ultimately could not continue the game.

As May exited the field, visibly frustrated by the abrupt end to his start, fans applauded his effort. Pitcher Robert Gasser replaced him, completing the inning. This incident marked the first time a pitcher exited after one pitch since Pablo Lopez on July 2, 2021, according to the Associated Press’s Jerry Beach.

Reportedly, Zach Braziller of the New York Post indicated that May’s injury wasn’t deemed severe. The Brewers released a statement noting a right scapula contusion with negative X-rays, suggesting no fractures. Though not broken, May is expected to endure some pain for a while. A forceful hit like that generally results in at least a significant bruise.

Fortunately for May, there is time to recover before the playoffs. The Milwaukee Brewers currently hold the best record in baseball at 81-51. They are aiming for a successful pennant run and potentially a World Series victory in October. May should focus on recovery throughout September to be ready for the crucial playoff stretch.
