Minnesota Lynx Coach Cheryl Reeve Defends Transgender Community

Minnesota Lynx head coach Cheryl Reeve openly expressed her support for the transgender community during a recent media session. This marked at least the fourth instance this season where Reeve addressed transgender issues publicly, following rallies held outside her team’s game. Reeve emphasized the importance of supporting the transgender community, stating, “It’s that the transgender community is one that deserves our support, and what is happening in the name of some issues of transgender in sports is really an attack on all transgender community.”

Reeve’s remarks came after Minnesota finished the regular season with a victory over the Indiana Fever at Target Center. Demonstrations by activists and counterprotesters, focusing on transgender athletes in women’s sports, occurred outside the venue.

Support for Transgender Inclusion

During a previous game against Indiana on Aug. 2, Reeve wore a “Trans Kids Belong” T-shirt, highlighting her stance. Increasingly vocal “Save Women’s Sports” activists held rallies supporting Fever guard Sophie Cunningham, advocating against the inclusion of biological males in women’s sports. Meanwhile, pro-trans counterprotesters consistently attended, showcasing the high degree of division.

Reeve recalled conversations with Cunningham on these topics, noting the importance of utilizing their platforms to educate the public. They understood the significance of open dialogue, despite differing opinions.

Gesture of Solidarity

Reeve described wearing the T-shirt as a “small gesture,” yet meaningful due to the feedback received from transgender individuals and families. “The amount of communication of people who were affected by something as simple as wearing a T-shirt in support of them—it was a small gesture by me,” she explained.

Reeve’s compassionate move aimed to uplift transgender individuals, helping them feel validated and seen. Messages from parents of transgender children confirmed the positive impact on families.

Calls for Inclusion

Reeve initially addressed the subject following the Supreme Court’s rulings on state laws restricting transgender athletes in women’s sports. Expressing discontent with political focus, she stressed that “exclusion is never the answer.” Reeve maintained that transgender participation should not overshadow other challenges female athletes encounter, such as insufficient facilities and inadequate resources.

Cunningham, advocating for separate spaces for young girls, echoed sentiments of protection and honesty. “I think that I am here to extend love,” she said whilst reinforcing the need to safeguard young athletes.

WNBA’s Stance

Amid ongoing debates, the WNBA initiated discussions between team leaders, prioritizing fairness and inclusion. Currently, no transgender woman plays in the league, and no immediate eligibility matters affect it. The league reiterated its commitment to balancing competitive integrity and inclusion.

Minnesota concluded the season with an impressive 33-11 record, securing their place in the playoffs, while Indiana ranked sixth.
