Overview of the Minnesota Senate Race
Democratic Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan is leading in Minnesota’s U.S. Senate race against Republican Michele Tafoya, as shown in recent polls. Although her lead is within the margin of error, the contest remains highly competitive ahead of Election Day on November 3. Democrats are aiming to regain control of the Senate, which Republicans currently dominate with a 53-47 majority. To do so, Democrats need to defend their seats and gain four more.
Midterm elections often reflect the current political climate and can lead to seat losses for the president’s party. Cook Political Report rates the Minnesota Senate race as likely Democrat.
Flanagan and Tafoya Compete for a Senate Seat
Both candidates are vying for the seat vacated by Democrat Tina Smith. Minnesota has not elected a Republican senator since 2002, when Norm Coleman won. Flanagan represents the Democratic Party’s progressive wing, defeating Representative Angie Craig in the primary with endorsements from senators Bernie Sanders and Ilhan Omar.
Tafoya, a former NFL reporter, won the Republican nomination and aims to leverage her name recognition. The race is attracting national attention, with Republicans seeking to gain ground in Minnesota, where Democrats have consistently performed well recently.
Poll Results
Recent polls reflect Flanagan’s narrow lead over Tafoya. A Quantus Insights poll conducted from September 8-10 among 720 likely voters, with a 4.2% margin of error, shows Flanagan leading 48.2% to Tafoya’s 44.4%. Commitment among voters is high, with 88.6% decided on their choice and 7.5% still open to change. Flanagan has strong support from women, while Tafoya is favored by men.
Poll data highlight generational differences, with Flanagan leading significantly among younger voters and Tafoya having more appeal among older demographics. A different poll by TIPP/League of American Workers indicates a tighter race, with 44% preferring Flanagan and 42% opting for Tafoya. Another survey from Mason-Dixon shows Democrats leading Republicans generally in the Senate race.
Prediction Markets and Senate Control
Prediction markets favor Flanagan to win the Minnesota Senate race. Kalshi and Polymarket show Flanagan as a substantial favorite. Control of the Senate hinges on Democrats flipping four Republican seats while maintaining their current ones.
Nationally, Trump’s approval ratings have declined, potentially affecting voter sentiment in key races. Nate Silver’s averages show Democrats leading in several crucial races, signaling possible shifts in Senate control.
Early voting in Minnesota begins on October 16.
