The Minnesota Vikings have decided on Kyler Murray as their starting quarterback, according to a source familiar with the matter. The source disclosed this to The Associated Press under the condition of anonymity, as the team had yet to make an official announcement on Tuesday.
Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell had previously stated that he would oversee a fair competition for the position between newcomer Murray and returning player J.J. McCarthy. While Murray had more opportunities to work with the first-team offense, McCarthy also received significant playing time in practices open to the public.
Murray’s transition involves adapting to a new system and coaching team, following his previous seven seasons with the Arizona Cardinals. This made an early decision advantageous for him, allowing maximum time to operate within the offense during training camp.
J.J. McCarthy, a Nazareth and Michigan alumnus, was the 10th overall pick in the 2024 draft. His debut season was challenging, marred by multiple injuries that limited him to 10 starts. To maintain experienced backup options, the team re-signed Carson Wentz.
