Recent 911 dispatch recordings revealed that a series of miscommunications delayed the emergency response after the failed execution of death row inmate Christa Pike by the Tennessee Department of Correction.
An initial 911 call was placed at around 8:40 p.m. on September 30, about an hour after the planned execution began, as reported by The Associated Press. The caller informed the dispatchers of the failed execution but could not provide a verification code to confirm the legitimacy of the call. This led operators to question the call’s authenticity.
So we have a medical call for service at the Riverbend Prison,a dispatcher explained in audio obtained by AP.
The dispatcher further relayed that the execution had been carried out, but the individual did not pass away, and an ambulance was needed. The operator expressed uncertainty about whether the call was genuine or possibly a prank.
In another audio segment, an operator canceled the emergency response, citing that supervisors at the Department of Emergency Communications had deemed it a false call, stating no medical assistance was needed at Riverbend Prison.
Confusion continued with communications between an operator and a person at Riverbend Prison. Despite the prison employee’s uncertainty about who made the call, emergency responders at the scene reported a state official outside the gate insisting on the reality of the emergency. This prompted Central Control to allow first responders access to the prison at 9:11 p.m.
By 9:34 p.m., Pike was being transported to a hospital. The convicted murderer’s execution by lethal injection had failed after she survived two doses of pentobarbital, a drug used in Tennessee’s execution protocol. Under state protocol, a third dose could not be administered. Pike became unconscious, was placed on a ventilator, and regained consciousness on October 6. She returned to prison on October 10, where she continues receiving medical care.
In response to the failed execution, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee has put a hold on all state executions pending further review. Attempts were made to contact the Tennessee Department of Correction and Pike’s attorneys for additional comments.
