MLB’s Ambitious Proposal for a Game in Grand Teton National Park

4 days ago 0

Major League Baseball is planning its next major event, swapping cityscapes and costly stadium refreshments for the natural beauty of Grand Teton National Park. Neutral-site games have been popular successes for MLB, but when news emerged that the league was exploring options on federal land, Washington intervened.

The White House announced that MLB had approached President Donald Trump’s administration to explore hosting a game at a national park, aiming for an experience akin to the Field of Dreams game in Iowa.

“This is not a Presidential directive, nor is it being directed by the White House. It’s also not being driven by the Department of Interior,” stated the White House.

Recently, during the Kansas City Federal Reserve’s Jackson Hole Economic Policy Symposium in Grand Teton National Park, concerns arose as the government shutdown continued, leaving National Park Service staff furloughed and potential park damage looming.

Despite the buzz around the project, the administration emphasized that the National Park Service hasn’t granted any permits and MLB hasn’t confirmed venue plans.

The administration clarified that if MLB wants to conduct site visits, it’s their choice, but Washington remains cautious about endorsing a national park game, partly due to potential wildlife disruptions, like unexpected appearances by grizzly bears.

MLB’s previous special games have been embraced by fans, including the Field of Dreams in Iowa, the Little League Classic in Williamsport, and games at historic sites like Rickwood Field in Alabama. They even transformed Bristol Motor Speedway in 2025 into a baseball venue.

National Park Service Deputy Director Frank Lands visited Wyoming, but the White House clarified his visit was a routine park inspection, not specifically scouting for baseball locations.

Creating a baseball event in Grand Teton would face significant logistical challenges, requiring temporary infrastructure, traffic management, and ensuring wildlife stays clear of the area. This ambitious proposal demands thorough environmental assessments, public input, and considerable paperwork.

With MLB’s 2027 special-event schedule already set, a game at Grand Teton isn’t possible until at least 2028.
