Modest Mouse has removed guitarist Simon O’Connor from its upcoming tour amid allegations of inappropriate conduct with a minor. The band shared this news on social media, stating, “Simon O’Connor will not be joining us on the upcoming tour.” They announced that Seth Jabour from Les Savy Fav will step in to play guitar.
The decision follows claims made by a 16-year-old fan on Reddit, who provided screenshots alleging that O’Connor sent her inappropriate messages. The fan claimed that the messages started after she liked some of O’Connor’s Instagram stories.
The fan stated that she had clearly indicated her age by sharing a birthday countdown marking her 17th birthday. Following the incident, O’Connor allegedly deleted the message string, addressing the situation as a “party night” misstep.
Simon O’Connor later responded to the allegations, asserting, “I unequivocally oppose any sexual behavior towards minors.” He explained that he mistakenly contacted a person he believed was using multiple fake social media profiles to interact with him. O’Connor admitted to poor judgment, stating that he unsent the messages upon realizing his mistake.
He conveyed remorse, saying, “I’m genuinely sorry to the person who received those messages. They didn’t deserve this.” O’Connor acknowledged the skepticism surrounding his statement, stating, “I can’t change what’s happened. All I can do is tell the truth, take responsibility for my mistake, and apologize.”
O’Connor had joined Modest Mouse in 2021 and previously toured with MGMT. He is featured on Modest Mouse’s recent album, “An Eraser and a Maze.” The band, known for its pioneering work in the indie rock scene, was originally formed in 1993 with Isaac Brock, late drummer Jeremiah Green, and bassist Eric Judy.
