Nashville Airport May Soon Honor Dolly Parton

1 month ago 0

Tennessee Governor Bill Lee has suggested renaming Nashville International Airport to honor Dolly Parton. This announcement follows the beloved country music singer’s recent death from cancer at age 80.

Governor Lee believes it is appropriate for Nashville’s airport to celebrate Parton’s legacy. He stated, “At a place where Tennessee welcomes the world, it is fitting that Nashville International Airport bear the name of our state’s favorite daughter and greet travelers with the enduring legacy of Dolly’s music, generosity, faith, and kindness.” Conversations with Parton’s representatives about the proposal have already taken place.

Parton’s fans have also shown strong support. An online petition in favor of renaming the airport has garnered over 157,000 signatures, gaining tens of thousands only since Parton’s passing. State Representative Todd Warner and singer Sheryl Crow back the petition as well.

The airport, known for its country music influence, already showcases attractions like the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, along with Grand Ole Opry-themed performances.

Several other U.S. airports are named in honor of notable figures, such as the Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport and Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport.

Parton, raised in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains in poverty, became a cultural icon. Her music and movies resonated across generations and geographical regions. Notable songs include “Jolene” and “I Will Always Love You”. She performed in films like “9 to 5” and “Steel Magnolias.”

Changing the airport’s name may require adjustments to the Metro Nashville Airport Authority’s naming policy, which currently stipulates that properties should be named posthumously, with a two-year waiting period. Discussions on the proposal and the policy are set for the airport authority’s meeting on September 17.

Additional honors for Parton in Tennessee have been considered, including legislation introduced by State Senator Jessie Seal proposing September 25 as “9 to 5” Day, a tribute to Parton’s well-loved song.
