The airport in Nashville, Tennessee, may soon be renamed for renowned country music artist Dolly Parton. This proposal was announced by Tennessee Governor Bill Lee, shortly after Parton passed away on Tuesday due to cancer at the age of 80. Parton’s exceptional contribution to music and her strong connection to Tennessee make this a meaningful way to honor her memory.
In his statement, Governor Lee expressed that renaming the Nashville International Airport to reflect ‘the name of our state’s favorite daughter’ would be appropriate. Lee has already initiated conversations with Parton’s representatives about this proposal, and it signifies the profound impact Parton had on Tennessee and the world.
Renaming the airport not only involves appreciation for Parton, but also requires changes to existing policies. Currently, the Metro Nashville Airport Authority mandates that airport properties be named only after individuals deceased for at least two years. The governor’s office conveyed that the proposal, along with the current naming policy, will be addressed at the airport authority’s meeting set for September 17.
