On Tuesday, the league made an announcement reflecting its international focus. The 2026-27 NBA regular season will begin on October 20 with the Detroit Pistons hosting the Boston Celtics.

The opening night will feature other notable matchups, including the Philadelphia 76ers versus the New York Knicks, and the Oklahoma City Thunder against the San Antonio Spurs. However, the Celtics-Pistons game stands out as it will tip off at 3 p.m. ET. This unconventional timing suggests a strategic move to engage fans beyond North America.

The NBA’s choice to start the season during a weekday afternoon caters to European audiences, following a significant increase in viewership from Europe in the past year.

The 2025-26 season was the first under an 11-year media partnership involving Disney, NBCUniversal, and Amazon Prime. Within this period, Amazon Prime reported a 28% rise in viewership for NBA games outside the U.S. compared to the previous year. According to data from SVG Europe, European viewership alone surged by 129% over the previous year, with the NBA Finals experiencing a 130% increase.

Despite NBC/Peacock holding the broadcast rights for the Celtics-Pistons opener, European audiences are expected to access it widely through NBC and contribute to the growing viewership numbers. This game will take place at 9 PM local time in London, facilitating live attendance from fans in Europe.

As part of its global initiative, the NBA plans to hold regular season games in Paris, France, and Manchester, England, in January 2027. This further underscores its commitment to nurturing an international fanbase.
