New England Patriots Secure First Win Amid Quarterback Concerns

1 week ago 0

The New England Patriots celebrated their first win of the season on Sunday, defeating the Pittsburgh Steelers 20-3. Despite the victory, head coach Mike Vrabel faced tough questions about his quarterback, Drake Maye.

Following the game, Vrabel had a tense exchange with Boston Globe reporter Ben Volin regarding Maye’s performance in the first two weeks. Vrabel dismissed these concerns, stating, “You’re not going to ruin my Sunday.” Reporter Greg Bedard’s questions about Maye’s struggles received a similar response from Vrabel, who preferred to focus on the win rather than dwell on negatives.

Drake Maye, the quarterback who led New England to the Super Bowl last season, has faced difficulties this year. Against the Steelers, he completed 14 of 22 passes for 208 yards with no touchdowns and one interception. Although he connected with Romeo Doubs for a 63-yard gain, the Patriots managed only 13 offensive points. The defense played a crucial role, restricting Aaron Rodgers to just 3 points and 235 total yards.

Rookie running back TreVeyon Henderson scored New England’s only offensive touchdown with a 39-yard run. Christian Barmore’s strip-sack of Rodgers, with Elijah Ponder returning the fumble 19 yards for a touchdown, sealed the win.

Despite the victory, Maye’s performance remains a concern. In a rematch of Super Bowl LX against the Seattle Seahawks, Maye threw three fourth-quarter interceptions, leading to a 13-10 loss after blowing a 10-point lead. The final interception, with 26 seconds remaining, ended a potential game-tying drive. After the game, Maye admitted impatience cost them the win. He stated, “Thought we had a good plan to start chipping away and be patient and lost patience, and it cost us.”

Maye’s stats from the two games include four interceptions and one touchdown pass, contrasting his 2025 performance where he threw for 4,394 yards and 31 touchdowns, nearly winning the NFL MVP. As the Patriots’ franchise quarterback struggles to regain form, questions about his performance continue, despite Vrabel’s desire to celebrate the team’s victory.
